raw ambition

This beautiful Chocolate and Persimmon Tart has a secret – can you guess what it is?

Its…

….wait for it…….

…..raw!

Are you as blown away as I am? I’d never have imagined raw food could look so tempting. In case you haven’t already guessed, I’m a huge sucker for good food photography (to the point where I won’t buy a cookbook that has more recipes than photos) so my recent discovery of Golubka was a bit of a breakthrough. Finally, a raw food blog that isn’t pushing seeds and dehydrated ick!

Their photos are so seductive, I’ve promised myself that the second I have more time on my hands I’m going to give one of their recipes a go. I mean, I already own a dehydrator…

If there are any raw foodies out there, I’d love your input on how easy/difficult raw food prep is! Any tips for a newbie?

What a weekend. Yesterday, I celebrated 7 fantastic years with the Adam to my – well, it would be funny if my name was Eve, wouldn’t it? but you get the idea – and today is Valentine’s Day!

Anyway, you’ve been following my twitter feed, you’ll already know how obsessed I am over my new pot of white calligraphy ink. So of course it was the first thing I reached for when I sat down to make my valentines.

I love how well it lends itself to modern calligraphy.

And yes, I make a valentine for my mother every year. You should too.

This year, she showed me up by making the most adorable themed dessert ever: ruby red, heart shaped agar-agar jellies.

There were also bunny-shaped almond jellies…which nobody could bear to eat.

Well, that’s probably enough nauseatingly sweet news for everyone. Happy Valentine’s Day!

wake and bake

January 31, 2011  |  Food, Life  |  No Comments

Rainy days always make me sleepy, so I’ve been keeping myself heavily caffeinated to quell the desire to hibernate. It’s kind of half-working, which is a bit of a curse at times. For example, I’m awake enough to have an intense craving for freshly-baked bread, but can’t for the life of me muster up the energy to bake them right now.

My inner good girl says this is ok, because I should be working anyway, but my inner bad girl is clicking through page after page of Coupe-Feti, a gorgeous Japanese baking blog.

Good thing there aren’t any recipes (or if there are, that I can’t tell) because these photos are making me eye up my Kitchenaid mixer and reconsider my priorities for the day.

feeling clammy

Maybe a childhood spent collecting seashells has caused a bias, but I am so in love with this clamshell ice bucket idea:

Personally, I’d gild the inside of it, skip the soda, and toss in a bottle of bubbly – there’s nothing in the world that can’t be improved with gold leafing and champagne. Nothing.

Giant glam-it-yourself resin clamshells are available here. Photo from Elle Decor.

comfort food cravings

I’ve been craving pasta like crazy lately, which seems like a clear sign from the universe that I should finally attempt this recipe for Parpadelle with Spiced Butter – I’ve had it bookmarked for ages now.

Looks good, hmm? Any recipe that calls for butter and pinenuts is usually an instant win in my books.

P.S: In case you aren’t already following me on twitter, here’s a picture of some invitations we’re working on right now. They’re absolutely gorgeous…and have resulted in the studio, press and I getting covered in gold ink and thus looking unusually glam!

sweet style

December 13, 2010  |  Fashion, Food  |  2 Comments

I’ve been nursing a serious sweet tooth lately – which would be fine if I had time to bake myself a remedy, but I don’t. Staring at these photos aren’t making it any better, though.

In fact, now I want to shop too, which is really dangerous!

Speaking of shopping, anyone started on their X’mas gift hunting yet? I got super organized this year and planned my gifts ages ago…only to leave the shopping undone till now, mid-December and right at the peak of mall madness. Brilliant, aren’t I? I’m gearing myself up to do it all in one day so I can avoid going downtown for the rest of the season. Wish me luck!

easy and free

Despite my affinity for baking, I have a mild phobia of pie-making. I don’t know why, but pie crust making always seems so tricky and daunting, and I hate that almost every recipe takes a very “Or Else” tone with the directions. Not helping.

Then I found this, and though I haven’t tried it yet I’m pretty sure it’s going to change my life.

Designed by Rethink for the Pastry Training Centre of Vancouver, it’s a pastry lesson printed on parchment paper – how genius is that? I love the cute illustrations and humorous tone of the recipe…even though it does actually say “Or Else” on step 3.

Brace yourself for the best part ever: the generous people at Rethink have a link that lets you download the poster for free!

A stack or roll of these would make the perfect Christmas gift for the foodie in your life (trust me. I’m the foodie in most of my friends’ lives) for the negligible cost of print fees and parchment paper. Then all you have to do is sit back and prepare yourself for the inevitable gush of gratitude and resulting gifts of homemade pies. Merry Christmas!

giving thanks

Happy thanksgiving everyone! We had a super low-key one this year since my crazy work schedule left me no time to cook, but if I could I would have definitely attempted these Drunken Pumpkin Bourbon Tarts. In fact, I might just stage a Thanksgiving do-over and make them next week as a surprise for Adam.

Despite spending four hours setting up for a job only to have the press seize on the 20th print, I am thankful for a lot today. Actually, I’m thankful that I’m remembering to be thankful! I think I’d have been a lot more upset about this setback if it wasn’t Thanksgiving, but having been mentally counting my blessings all day, I’m feeling remarkably zen. Isn’t it amazing what a little perspective can do?
