Is anyone else out there a total Instagram addict? I can’t go a day without it – part voyeurism, part art, what’s not to love?
You’ve probably already guessed this by looking at the photo, but my partner-in-crime Belle and I made our own March Photo-a-Day challenge, and it would love for you to join us!
Save & share this photo with your friends, and I’ll see you on out there. If you’re new to this, just remember to tag your photos with #marchphotoaday so we can all keep connected. Isn’t the internet awesome?
I don’t know about you, but every year on my birthday I like to buy myself a little treat. It’s almost always an impulse buy, because that’s really half the gift – the luxury of not have to mentally prove absolute necessity before purchase.
This year I bought a camera. A Contax 645 to be exact, with default Zeiss glass no less.
I’m still trying to figure it all out and find my groove, but it’s safe to say I’m already quite smitten by the photos it produces. These are some highlights from my first roll, which I’m going to kick off with an obligatory photo of Dolce (still the best ever impulse birthday buy).
Good thing I’m really getting into it, because Adam gifted me with a second Contax system yesterday as a “backup”, on top of the enormous film scanner I got earlier this week as an official birthday present. Looks like someone really wants me taking this new hobby seriously…
I’m still fighting a losing battle with afternoon yawning, so I’ll keep this short and sweet.
I’ve left New York for the Pennsylvania wilds. Think four hours of spring flower spotting….
beautiful scenery…
and OMGOMGOMG moments where a detour was seriously considered.
To be honest, there was also a ton of roadkill, but I decided against photos of that. Let’s just say it’s definitely turkey season ’round these parts.
Speaking of wildlife, we checked out the Elk Country Visitor Center – a newly built museum dedicated to educating the public about elk, the importance of their conservation and their history in Pennsylvania.
I especially loved the antler room, where unlike other museums, touching is encouraged. It took all the willpower I had in me to stop myself from running off with a set of these beauties.
Also neat: the dedicated paving stones leading up to the center. This one was my favourite.
That’s it for now my dears! I’ll be back soon with more photos…if I don’t freeze my fingers off first. Can you believe they’re calling for snow tomorrow? Brrr.
Hello from the other side of the globe!
Thanks to jetlag seriously kicking my butt, staying awake during daylight hours has pretty much been my biggest accomplishment lately. So instead of a long post about not much at all, I thought I’d share some photos of my trip so far.
These are of my drive upstate from JFK, and all the bridges we passed or crossed along the way.
And guess where I took these photos of gorgeous cherry blossoms in full bloom? A parking lot. Seriously.
And yes, that is the cutie who built the lens I’m using for these photos.
Quick aside: I’m not sure how well reported this is outside of the US, but earlier this week a tornado storm hit the south, ripping entire towns apart in its wake. The National Weather Service is saying that over 150 tornados touched down – I can’t even wrap my head around that. The scale of the storm literally left people with nowhere safe to run to, and now nowhere to go home to. I know this may be an issue far removed from any of you back home, but I couldn’t not post these links to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, both of which are accepting donations to help victims rebuild their communities and lives from scratch.
Last weekend, we took the dogs for a walk through the Botanic Gardens’ Bukit Timah annex. Isn’t it so lovely and green?
I hadn’t been there in years, and as I strolled along the pathways, I got to reminiscing about all the good times I’d had there with friends. I was so happy and at peace that it was almost like an out-of-body experience for me – a total zen moment.
I snapped out of it long enough to take this photo…
…and then handed the camera off to my pro-in-tow, who took the rest of these.
Speaking of flowers, I hope everyone’s gotten their Chinese New Year blooms already – we went to pick ours up last night at Goodwood and it was just madness!
As a continuation from yesterday’s post, here are some more shots from the same “roll”:
A few days ago, we somehow wound up at the Singapore Indoor Stadium and randomly decided to get out and explore.
I’d only ever seen it at night before (and packed to the gills with concert-goers) so it was kind of weird being one of the few people around.
Quite surreal and lovely in its eerie desolation, don’t you think?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve owned, used and loved my Lomo LCA. To me, it’s everything a good camera should be: it’s compact, yields brilliantly quirky photos, and isn’t digital.
Just so you know, that last point never ceases to raise an eye-rolling from my pro-photographer fiance (whom I suspect constantly questions his initial decision to court a film snob). To date, he’s spent about seven years ribbing me about my reluctance to switch over to the Dark Side. But I’ve always had the perfect rebuttal: I simply told him I was holding out for a digital Lomo LCA.
I had a great run with this – a digital LCA is a complete oxymoron. No way would anyone put the amount of technical research required into digitizing a camera famous for its…questionable photographic standards. That would be like trying design formal gym shoes. Why bother?
Well, when it’s a challenge, that’s why. Or at least that’s what I gathered when he handed me a present: a genuine LCA lens fitted to the Nex-5 I bought for work. In other words, a digital LCA.
The reason this post is so long is because for a very long time, I had no words. I still don’t, actually, except the ones it takes to explain how much of a dream come true this is. And how lucky I am to have found a guy to have done this for me, to have built a lens for me himself over a weekend like it was no big deal.
But now I’m out of words again, so I’ll just go ahead and post a few photos.
I hope you liked ‘em, because – see the new category? – there’s more to come.
